Physics 1100

Test #1

5 February 2002

Use methods shown in class. Show all work.

  1. [5 Marks] The diagram below represents the velocity (v in m/s) as a function of time (t in seconds) of a ball moving in a straight line.
    1. Find the average velocity in segment A.
    2. Find the acceleration in segment C.
    3. Find the displacement for t = 5 s to t = 9 s.
    4. Does the ball ever turn around? If so when?

  2. [10 marks] Radar at an airport tells an air traffic controller that a light airplane is approaching at 220 km/h at 33° north of east. Instruments also tell the air traffic controller that there is a wind blowing at 42 km/h at 25° west of south. What is the velocity of the light air plane with respect to the air?
  3. [2 Marks] The diagram below shows a velocity versus time graph. Sketch the appropriate position versus time graph.
  4. [2 Marks] The diagram below shows a position versus time graph. Sketch the appropriate velocity versus time graph. Is the acceleration positive, negative, or zero?
  5. [10 Marks] A car is 500 m behind the front of a pickup truck. The pickup is travelling at a constant 72 km/h. The car, initially travelling at 90 km/h, accelerates at 1.0 m/s2. How long does it take for the car to reach the front of the pickup? How far will each vehicle have travelled in that time? Be sure to include a graph!
